Why 512GB is the middle tier

512GB gives substantially more room than the entry tier without the total price of 1TB. It suits buyers who download regularly but are willing to remove completed games occasionally. The capacity is not automatically a sweet spot, however: that conclusion depends on how much its current Amazon UK price exceeds 256GB and how close it sits to 1TB.

The calculator turns that broad description into a personal estimate. Use the typical size across your own likely games, not a single headline example, then add DLC and update allowance. Keeping a reserve reduces the risk of choosing a tier that works only when completely full.

512GB versus 256GB

Moving from 256GB to 512GB roughly doubles advertised storage. When the price premium is well below 100%, the larger card also improves £/GB; when the premium is unusually high, the smaller card can remain the better deal. Choose the smaller tier if upfront cost matters and your library is easy to rotate. Choose 512GB if repeated downloads, multiple users or several large games make storage management inconvenient. Both choices still require the same Express compatibility evidence.

512GB versus 1TB

A 1TB card offers more headroom and can sometimes lead on £/GB, but paying for unused capacity is not automatically value. The relevant question is whether your estimate is likely to outgrow 512GB during the life of the card. If not, the lower checkout price can be more useful than a theoretical unit saving.

Availability can temporarily distort comparisons, which is why unavailable tiers are shown as unavailable rather than populated with ordinary cards. Return later after a catalogue refresh if the exact market is thin; newly discovered qualifying cards will enter automatically.

microSD versus microSD Express

The card shape is similar, but the storage standard is different. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance says the console uses microSD Express for expanded software storage and supports Express cards up to 2TB. Ordinary microSD cards used with the original Switch do not become game-storage upgrades merely because they fit the slot.

The safe purchasing check is explicit microSD Express wording or the Express logo on the exact selected product. Capacity, Nintendo artwork, a gaming label or the word Express elsewhere in a title is not enough by itself.

What the price comparison measures

Every live value starts with the current Amazon.co.uk price and the advertised capacity parsed from the standalone card title. The site uses the same decimal convention throughout: 256GB means 256 advertised gigabytes, 512GB means 512, and 1TB means 1,000. £/GB is current pounds divided by those advertised gigabytes.

That calculation makes different capacities comparable, but it does not decide your budget. A larger card can offer a lower £/GB while costing much more at checkout. The capacity table therefore shows both price and unit value, while the premium note describes the percentage change between currently available tiers.

Downloads, updates, captures and save data

Nintendo distinguishes software storage from game save data. Downloaded software, DLC, update data and supported screenshots or videos can use a microSD Express card. Game save data remains in the console’s system memory and cannot be presented as extra card capacity. Deleting downloaded software therefore does not mean the card held the associated save progress.

The first use of a microSD Express card may require a system update. Follow the console’s on-screen process and Nintendo’s instructions when inserting, formatting or moving data. Formatting removes data on the card, so verify anything that needs copying before continuing.

Advertised capacity is also not identical to every byte shown after formatting and system use. Leave practical free space, especially when estimating a library that will receive future updates. The calculator’s reserve input exists for that reason.

How incompatible products stay out

The reusable classifier first requires a strong microSD Express pattern such as microSD Express, microSDXC Express or a recognised equivalent. It then assigns model families only after the standard is established. Samsung P9 Express cannot match a Samsung SSD; Lexar PLAY PRO cannot match an ordinary Lexar PLAY card; and old SanDisk Nintendo Switch artwork cannot qualify without Express support.
